Are you having trouble controlling your sweet tooth? These tips for how to stop sugar cravings will help you get a handle on your sweet tooth.
A lot of people struggle with cravings for sugar. Sugar not only tastes good, but it also stimulates the release of serotonin, a chemical that causes an overall sense of well-being.
Sugar is a simple carbohydrate, so when consumed it's quickly digested by the body and causes a rapid rise in blood sugar (glucose) and a spike in energy. Unfortunately, the rapid rise in blood sugar is soon followed by a rapid drop in blood sugar, which leads to a lack of energy and a craving for more simple carbohydrates.
Sugar is also a "negative" nutrient. It contains no vitamins or minerals and your body has to use stored nutrients to process it.
Here are seven tips for how to stop sugar cravings:
1. Get rid of the sugary foods in your house.
This is the most important tip when it comes to controlling sugar cravings. If sugary foods are in your house, you're most likely not going to have the willpower to resist them once cravings for sugar hit.
2. Eat a healthy breakfast.
Eating a healthy breakfast consisting of protein and complex carbohydrates will provide your body with the nutrients and energy it needs after a night of fasting. People who don't eat breakfast often start to feel hungry and lethargic by mid-morning, and then frequently reach for some sort of sugary food to provide them with a quick pick-me-up. But as stated previously, the rapid rise in blood sugar and the energy boost that comes from eating sugary foods will soon be followed by a rapid drop in blood sugar, a lack of energy, and a craving for more sugary foods.
3. Eat several small, healthy meals throughout the day.
Eating several small, healthy meals consisting of protein and complex carbohydrates throughout the day will help keep your blood sugar level steady (which will help prevent cravings for sugar) and will provide your body with a consistent supply of nutrients and energy.
4. Avoid diet sodas.
The artificial sweeteners in diet sodas can actually increase your appetite and increase your cravings for sugary foods.
5. Drink plenty of water.
Water has a variety of health benefits, and drinking plenty of water is also a great way to lessen your cravings for sugary foods.
6. Brush your teeth.
The clean taste in your mouth that comes from brushing your teeth will make you less likely to want to eat sugary foods.
7. Get moving.
When cravings for sugar hit, go for a walk or a run or hit the gym. Any sort of physical activity will lessen your cravings for sugary foods, and the more you exercise and the fitter and healthier you get, the less you'll crave sugary foods.
In conclusion, by following these tips for how to stop sugar cravings, you'll be well on your way to controlling your sweet tooth and eating a healthier diet. And once you get used to eating a healthy, low sugar diet, your desire for sugary foods will lessen greatly.
