7 Feng shui Cures for Health

Many of us think of our home as our sanctuary away from the world. After a hard day at work we long to come home to kick our feet up and to recharge our batteries. When you walk into to your home hopefully get a relaxed calming sense, unfortunately for some it is in fact the opposite: a stressful andFengshui anxious reaction. For those of you who fall into the second category coming home to stressful environment (after leaving a stressful workplace) can take a toll on your health. Can we bring a sense of calm to our home without spending buckets of money on a complete reno, a nanny and a housekeeper?

Improving your health and wellness can begin in the home with the help of some Feng Shui principles. Okay your saying to yourself "Please, my house is so past Feng Shui - a good carpet bombing is the only thing that would make this place better." Hear me out I have every confidence that if you sit down and follow even the first three points you will improve your well-being - hey it can't hurt to try. Frankly even by spending some time taking stock of your surroundings and the state of your home you will be further ahead.

The following points are based on Feng Shui philosophy and plain ol' common sense. Some of the points below are specific Feng Shui cures, some are Feng Shui principles that can be applied universally and some will involve a degree of work on your part.

Clear the Junk
I'm not going to dwell on this too much because I think I have written on this subject enough but really if you want to bring in anything good into your life you need to get rid of all the crap filling your hallways, spare rooms, countertops, entryways...., If you have read this far and said the following "but I know where everything is and I like it this way". Really? Please. Sit down. You know you need to change (and I know it's hard) so if this is the only point that you complete that will be monumental.

The Elements
This is one of the principles I mentioned. The elements associated with health are earth and wood. By adding these elements you can jump start your path to improved health. Each element is represented by a colour, shape and material. The wood element for example is represented by green (all shades of green), columnar shapes like a tree (think tall and skinny) and, fairly obviously, things that are made of wood for example; wood floors, plants and even cotton. Remember too much of one thing is not always better. You should have all five elements represented in a space but you can accentuate the wood element for health in that it brings about new growth and vibrancy. The earth element I will discuss in the points below.

Being centered
Another principle in Feng Shui is the concept of the center of the home being the most important area. It only makes sense that it also represents health. The center is what grounds and unifies all other areas just as when your health suffers everything else in your life tends to suffer. When using the Bagua Map (a tool of Feng Shui) your home is divided into nine sections luckily, the center, being the easiest to locate is where you can focus your energies for improving health. Things to do: make sure the area is clear of objects that are negative, add the earth element and remove any clutter.

Getting grounded
Earth is the element associated with the center of the home and therefore health. It is represented by the colours yellow and brown, square shapes and anything derived from the earth i.e. stone or clay. A nice way to combine the earth and wood element is to have a vase of yellow flowers in the center of the home - or if that is not possible on the kitchen counter. Using the earth element will increase stability in your life as well as make you feel more connected and centered which will alleviate stress and in turn improve your health.

Increase your own personal chi
Take up yoga. I think many of you may already practice yoga considering the site this article is on. Chi flows thorough living things just as it flows in nature and around your home. Through yoga and pranayama exercises you are moving chi/prana thorough the body and releasing blocks. If you do practice yoga you will understand me when I say that you can feel this energy flowing and pulsing when you lie still in savasana or you can feel chi's overwhelming power in a pose like ustrasana camel pose.

Change your sheets
One simple Feng Shui cure to improve health is to change your bedsheets from white to yellow or green. What harm can it do to change the colour of your sheets plus it is a good excuse to go to Crate and Barrel.

Add plants
I mentioned this in an earlier point that plants represent the wood element and in turn enhance health. But you need to make sure you get the right plant for the job. No spiky plants in the bedroom but cacti are great to place next to your computer and are said to reduce EMF emissions. Round leaved plants are soothing such as rubber plant. Big, leafy plants like a ficus help fill stagnant corners and revive chi.

Good luck and good health - making a few changes will kick-start your desire to do more so start small but be passionate about your commitment to better health and wellbeing.
